Populations of Nye County, Pahrump continue decline

PVT

As talk of the incorporation of Pahrump heats up, the population estimates for the second quarter of 2010 show Pahrump with the usual 83 percent of the county population.

The population of Pahrump dropped by 13 residents from March 31 to June 30, the end of the second quarter, according to estimates released by the Nye County Planning Department. County wide, the population declined by 111 from 46,361 to 46,250 residents.

Tonopah, the county seat, saw its population fall 1.7 percent from 2,899 to 2,871 residents, a loss of 28 Tonopahns.

Beatty had 1,033 residents as of June 30, a loss of 40 people, or 2.6 percent.

Amargosa Valley had an estimated 1,400 residents, down 16 people or 1.1 percent.

Gabbs gained seven, to finish with 390 residents. Smoky Valley lost 21 residents, to drop 1 percent to 1,771 residents.

Over the long term, Nye County lost 600 residents from the peak of 46,850 residents at the end of 2007, when the economic recession began, a loss of 1.2 percent.

Pahrump reached a peak of 38,859 residents at the end of 2007, the latest figures represent a decline of 543 residents, a drop of 1.4 percent.

The planning department uses active residential accounts from various electrical utilities multiplied by the average number of persons per household as determined by the Census Bureau.

People residing in group quarters like nursing homes and detention facilities are estimated using a trending factor that is checked annually by telephone interviews. The Pahrump area will receive 1,072 more residents when the Nevada Southern Detention Center is fully occupied, which amounts to 2.8 percent of the current population.

The population estimates are used to assess baseline conditions for the Yucca Mountain Project, to prepare baseline projections for the county and its communities as well as for public and private agency planning and management.

These little towns are a joke, 390, 1,400, 1,033, 1,771 residence for each town, and Pahrump supports them with our money. Lets incorporate and put these towns out of business or at least let them feed on them selfs.

Jake, you’re another outstanding example of everything that’s wrong with Pahrump. It matters not if Pahrump incorporates. These small towns, which have been around a heck of a lot longer than Pahrump, will continue to exist no matter what happens here. And maybe you can answer this question, since you seem to be such an expert: Considering the fact that each community has its own tax rate, just like Pahrump has its own, how we’re supporting them? I’m all ears.

jake, jake jake i bet you work for Mr. Kohbarger???

    • vikki says:

jake, jake, jake….las vegas was once a little town….look at it now!! a “SHIT” hole………we pull our own weight and pay our own taxes….we have a life…why don’t you go find a life and better yet, go back to LV……..

  2. 4 pahrump says:

BTW…Pahrump has the lowest tax rate in NYE county. Bet that will change if incorporation happened.

  3. Jake says:

Ok, then tell me where 75% of Pahrump’s money goes?

  4. Jake says:

Also tell me why I can’t walk my dog on a side walk, why my kids go to poor schools, why I have to drive to Vegas for everything, why I have to drive 10 miles to the closest park, why I have to drive to the center of town to shop? Because the money doesn’t stay in Pahrump!

    • Donner says:

Did I tell you to move here with your KIDS? I am SO SICK of people trying to shove things in my face just because they didn’t do any research before they moved here with their pack of brats and now want to screw up my life because they have “children.. whine whine cry cry”

Do your due diligence before you move into a tiny town and do NOT try to change the town to fit your own selfish needs.

  5. Tim W. says:

Wow Jake ! I love my little town with its dust, winds, heat and tumbleweeds ! If you want sidewalks and parks and want big shopping malls then move back to where you came from or move to a place that has all that crap ! I moved here to get away from that stuff ! I dont need sidewalks, neighborhood parks, street lights, etc etc etc ! BTW…..this is a rural community which is why most of us moved here to begin with. What part of NO don’t you incorporation people understand ?
OH, and I love the way they are including the detention facility inmates in the residents population in Pahrump. Next they will be counting head stones to show a higher number of permanent residents !

  6. Fred says:

If you moved here from CALIFORNIA and expect it to be like Kalifornia with more laws, taxes, rules, and SIDEWALKS, please hop back in the moving van and GO AWAY please.

We are a small TOWN and no matter how hard people push we will ALWAYS be a small town. Some of us like it that way.

Thanks to our PUSHY town manager we are nothing more than a PRISON town now.

    • vikki says:

fred you got that right!! all the independent small towns in nevada and else where start standing up for our independence and rights….it comes down to the governmment taking over and controlling are every move….small towns are something they want controll of….the lasst frontier are these independent little towns in the middle on nowheres…..there great and the folks that live there are strong and beautiful….keep that spirit and freedom…once incorporate into what ever they decide…you lose that freedom….your screwed…do not allow it to happen………..

  7. PahrumpResident says:

As I remember it the last time “we” voted against incorporation “we” had tax increases not long after the elections, oh yeah Utilities Inc. & Valley Electric have rasied thier cost by what seems double since that election as well. So explain to me how we will have to pay more than if “we” incorporate? And even if we payed half or a quarter of what the other counties are paying in taxes, we have at least 6X the population (of those communities combined) paying taxes, so why are we supporting these counties with our tax dollars? The only reason that I have heard why we shouldn’t incoorporate is that our taxes “might” go up.

All of this “move back where you came from” talk is absoulutely silly. That isn’t going to happen so maybe come up with a more productive plan of action because everytime I hear some body say “if you don’t like it move back where you came from” I have a picture of a little kid losing a arguement and spouting off something like “Oh yeah well jump off a bridge”. While it may help vent frustration it does nothing to fix the problem.

  8. Larry says:

People moving to a small town will soon ruin it.
They realize it does not have side walks and street lights like the place they just left.
So why do they want to stay, Go home.
I have been here and been through that, You can actually see the Stars at night.
Electing some People will ruin your town because these People have the Power to ruin the town.
So why is it that Dogs can not walk on the side walk?
Why do so many hate Dogs, Man’s BEST FRIEND.
    I prefer Dogs to kids!

  9. Kelly says:

Ya’ll are in denial. You consider this a small town with 37,000 people, a home depot, and a detention center. This is no longer a small town, sorry.

  10. Sonny B. says:

Pahrump is supported by small business owners whose profits stay here. Chain stores such as Walmart, although convenient, do not enduce growth as their profits are used elsewhere.

The only growth for Pahrump will come from retirees bringing their wealth to the town.

  11. Mimi says:

One of the big problems in small town Pahrump is the screwy town board & the double screwy Town Manager. We do not need to incorporate; we do not need more businesses in Pahrump (are you reading this Harley?); we do not need a Town Manager. Yes, I read where there is some 35,000 residents in Pahrump … but the folks here are spread out … I don’t belive there are 35,000 residents in Pahrump … more like 25,000. If it were not for the retired people living in Pahrump, the town would dry up. Stop trying to make Pahrump into a mini-Las Vegas. Pahrump is a small town with unique individuals who like quiet county life, without a bunch of people prying into their personal affairs. So for the folks who are complaining about not having sidewalks, or street lights, or near-by shopping … you are here, stop complaning & be happy with what you have … a wonderful unique place to call home :)

  12. NYESux says:

there is nothing unique, quaint, or happy to call that SHIT hole a home.. TRASHY ppl, dirty restaurants, has en one ever looked at carpets at the nugget near the bowling center, its called a STEAM CLEANER!…Going to wal mart with nasty short shorts showing off half ur ass and 85% of the residents missing their teeth… nothing for kids to do but get pregnant… seen kids as young as 11 having babies..parents dumping their kids off on other ppl or places.. that town doesnt need to become incorporated.. let it stay the way it is… ppl need to continue saying “pahrump, whats that!” haha
keep building your Overpriced small businesses and out of garage businesses, selling things out of their vans… yes pahrump stay the scum bag u are

    • Larry says:

Well it sounds like you are very discontint, That is sad.
My self, I would like to live unincumbered by Government.
Trying to clean up, I realized just how much junk I have laying around.
I have a lot of things from the days I was Productive.
Getting help that will work is my Problems now.
When they start stealing things they don’t come back.

  13. joe says:

Yes, it’s been a steady decline for quite sometime now, so why don’t we keep paying those 3 loser public defenders more, more, more! 660k per year for those 3 bozos–good grief!

  14. nd says:

Why can’t Pahrump be a place for everyone to live happily. (me and my pipe dreams)

Lived in Rural areas before, Pahrump in my eyes is not rural, it is a place where
    1. people come to die
    2. people are happy to live on the ‘dole’
    3. people are stubbornly opinionated (noone else has the right to disagree)
    3. people are just plain unhappy
( as seen from the comments above)

We live in the 21st century, I know change is hard from some folks to wrap their minds around; pettiness aside we should all work to make this town as good as it can be.

  15. Another Pahrump resident putting in my 2 cents says:

I agree somewhat with Jake. Commercials on local pahrump stations say to keep your tax dollars in pahrump. But maybe if they put more business’s in pahrump like target, michael’s,ross etc. We wouldn’t have to drive to vegas for everything other that groceries.
