Boy Scout Troop and Crew 651, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10054 and American Legion Post 22 with assistance of Theodore L. Ward, will conduct a flag retirement ceremony at 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the VFW Post on Homestead Road.
The participation of the Boy Scout troop is an Eagle Scout project.
The ceremony is designed to bring attention to the activities of the local VFW. It will highlight services to the community and VFW officers will be on site to answer questions relative to the goals, mission and additional services provided by the VFW and American Legion.
The VFW receives hundreds of flags every year destined for retirement, and they come to the VFW in various conditions and from various groups.
A flag in faded, torn and tattered condition does not properly represent the nation and the United States Code k states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
The ceremony on Sept. 11 will properly retire the unusable flags.
Anyone wanting to attend is welcome.
