Soroptimist awards

The Soroptimist International Pahrump Valley is looking for qualified candidates who meet the criteria to receive two awards.

For the Violet Richardson Award: Candidates must be girls between the ages of 14 and 17 and actively volunteering and giving back to the community.

The award is a monetary gift and a matching donation will go to her charitable organization of choice.

The Women's Opportunity Award: Candidate must be a woman who is the main financial provider for her family. She must be continuing her education through an undergraduate or vocational/trade school program and she must have a financial need.

All church hymn sing

Shepherd of the Valley Church will host a fifth Sunday Sing at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Bob Ruud Community Center.

Refreshments will follow the sing. They will need cookies, brownies and other finger foods.

Thrivant will supply the drinks.

Introduction to Ham Radio

The Southern Nye County Amateur Radio Emergency Services will offer an introduction to Ham Radio claass in preparation for the licensing test at 8 a.m. Jan. 17 in the offices, 1510 Siri Lane.

The class is for the technician license only. To take the test which will follow the class, bring a photo ID or two non-photo IDs and $15. The test will begin at 1 p.m.

Friends of the Library

Pahrump Friends of the Library will have a monthly meeting at 9:15 a.m. Dec. 6 in the conference room of the Pahrump Community Library.

Food Drive

The volunteers of Nye County Emergency Services in conjunction with KNYE Radio and others will hold another Food Drive, 10-2 p.m. Dec. 6 in the parking lot of Albertson's.

Non-perishable items needed include peanut butter, jellies, beans and pasta, rice, canned meats, fruits, soups and vegetables.

Computer User's Group meets

The Pahrump Computer User's Group will meet at 1 p.m. Dec. 1 in the large meeting room of the Pahrump Community Library.

The program will be "How to Manage Files and Folders in Windows Vista," by Don Norvell and Mike Erwin will discuss "New and Improved Computer Technology in the Past and Advancements on the Horizon."

Park in the rear of the library where there is ample space.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Life Line Screening

Residents living in and around Pahrump can be screened to reduce the risk of stroke. The complete screening package now includes heart rhythm screening to check for irregular heartbeat, a major risk factor for a stroke.

Life Line Screening will provide screening services for appointments beginning at 9 a.m. Dec. 2 at the Elks Lodge No. 2796.

The cost of the screening package is $149. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete.

Winter market

The University of Nevada Master Gardeners will host a winter market at 9 a.m. Dec. 13 and 14 in the east parking lot of Petrack Park, Highway 160 and Basin Avenue.

All sale items will be home-grown or homemade. There will be fresh winter produce, nuts, eggs, baked goods, gift baskets, jewelry, knitted and crochet items, ceramics, fabric crafts, wood crafts, leather crafts, Christmas trees and more.

Persons in need of special assistance should call the Nevada Cooperative Extension office three days prior to the event at 727-5532.

Aircraft Association meets

The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter 1160 will meet at 1 p.m. Dec. 6 in Phil Shallenberger's hangar, corner of Helicopter Road and Jet Place.

The program will feature a talk by David Potter of Black Mountain Avionics on aircraft avionics.

VFW in December

The VFW hosts a swap meet the second and fourth Saturday of each month 7-3 p.m. on the VFW grounds. Reservations for a spot are $7 if you bring your own table and $10 if you rent one from the VFW.

There is free parking and the Snacks by Hilda will serve up the hotdogs and chips for $1.50. Call 727-6072 for information.

Pet adoptions

The Nye County Animal Shelter will hold pet adoptions 10-2 p.m. every Saturday at Hollywood Video, 240 S. Highway 160.

Due to the increase in animals at the Nye County Animal Shelter and the expenses in caring for them, the fees will increase.

Beginning Nov. 1, the fees for adopting a dog will be $85 and the fees for adopting a cat or kitten will be $55.

Fees include spay/neuter, vaccination, rabies shot, a bag of food and one-year county license.

Christmas Bazaar

There will be a Christmas Bazaar 8-5 p.m. Dec. 5 and 6 at 1481 E. Gamebird Road at Money Street.

Items will be reasonably priced for stocking stuffers, decorations, trees, gifts, hand-crafted items, small furniture and baked goods.

NDOT sign support

The Nevada Department of Transportation will be installing sign supports for the service clubs and churches of Pahrump.

All of those organizations interested in the programs should contact the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce to complete an application.

The chamber will determine which organizations meet the criteria.

Qualified groups will receive two sign blanks to be printed/completed at their expense.

Jobs for 55 and older

The AARP Foundation/SCSEP has part-time, temporary positions for persons 55 and older who are getting back into the job market.

Scout uniforms and equipment

Pahrump has a number of boys ages 7-16 interested in scouting but need uniforms and gear. Donations of camping equipment and uniforms are appreciated.

Pick up is available or items may be dropped at Pahrump Party Supply.

Free DVD

Faith Fellowship is offering a free copy of the DVD, "The Greatest Gamble" with Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort to anyone who is interested.

Melanoma Fighters Club

"Mandy's Melanoma Fighters Club" seeks two to three preteen and teenagers from each middle and high school in Pahrump to promote melanoma and skin cancer awareness in their school.
